Delta Spotlight - Kajal Kumar

As soon as Kajal Kumar starts speaking, it’s clear she’s a woman on a mission, both in life and at work. Despite only joining the Delta Insurance team in October as an underwriter, she already has growth ambition. “I definitely want to become a senior underwriter,” she says, smiling.

Kajal joined the insurance sector in 2018 as an early talent graduate. After four years cutting her teeth as a broker, she made the move over to underwriting following a recommendation from Delta Insurance colleague and friend, Miro Dordevich. “I love it, I feel like this is more me because it’s more technical,” she says. “I enjoy delving into the details and working on the calculation sheets, compared to broking which is more client-facing.”

But the liability underwriter wasn’t going to leave broking for just anyone. “Delta was my first and only pick,” she says. “I wouldn’t have moved if it wasn’t for Delta. They’re all about the people; management listens to us and it’s very homely. It’s such a great place to work.”

Culture is important to Kajal in more ways than one. When she’s not pursuing her dreams of being a senior underwriter, she’s dancing and volunteering for her local Waitakere Indian Association. While coordinating more than 400 performers for important Diwali and other holiday performances might not be everyone’s cup of tea, for Kajal it’s what brings her the most joy. Well that, and liability spreadsheets.
